Taekwondo 태권도 is a hard martial art originating in Korea. An amalgamation of Chinese, Japanese, and traditional Korean fighting styles, taekwondo has become the world's most commonly practiced martial art, and is the national sport of Korea as well as an Olympic sporting event.

In Korean, derived from hanja, tae means "to strike or smash with the foot"; kwon means "to strike or smash with the hand"; and do means "way" or "path". Hence, taekwondo is loosely translated as "the way of the foot and the fist". Taekwondo's popularity has resulted in the divergent evolution of the martial art. As with many other martial arts, taekwondo is a combination of combat technique, self-defense, sport, exercise, entertainment, and philosophy.

TaeKwonDo was given it’s name in 1957 after the end of the Japanese occupation. General Choi felt that combining the different splinter groups of martial arts would help to unify the Korean people and give them some sense of pride in their country again. The name TaeKwonDo was selected because it was similar to TaeKeon, the original Korean national martial art.

Today, there are lots of reasons to have pride in TaeKwonDo. It has spread throughout the world, and has become the most widely practiced martial art in the United States. In the year 2000 TaeKwonDo became an Olympic sport. To find out more about TaeKwonDo, check your local library or search for TaeKwonDo on the internet.

Metro TaeKwonDo Student Programs
The vision of the Metro TaeKwonDo Program is to build a community by helping people get in shape, be safe and at the same time instill the life skills and character of a true martial artist. Upholding important values like courtesy, patience, respect, self control and integrity.

We will also help you achieve self discipline, high self esteem, a positive out look, a spirit of constant improvement, and an attitude that refuses to give up. These values and life skills will lead to remarkable improvements in academics, careers, and relationships, literally making a better community one black belt at a time.

                                                            Youth Program
                           Taekwondo Teaches Kids A Lot!
Our Youth Program for ages 6-12 is focused on the physical, emotional and mental well-being, as well as education of our children. Our children's program uses interesting and enjoyable methods to keep the student's attention and teach our young students skills that they can use for life. We promote non-violent resolutions to conflict. More than any other sport, Taekwondo gives our children the chance to explore their innate powers. Marvel as they increase in strength, flexibility, endurance, balance, and harmony. This is only the start. Physical skills act as a foundation for something much more important: the development of value skills, both mental and emotional.

Students learn the importance of Black Belt Excellence, a metaphor for demonstrating strong character. This class meets three times per week for 45 minutes. Instructors lead by example and earn the respect of the students by always using positive reinforcement. Enrolling your child in Metro TaeKwonDo's Life Skill School could be one of the best decisions you could make toward their future.

At Metro TaeKwonDo, your child will experience:

  • A more positive attitude toward life
  • Improved effort and motivation at home
  • Increased respect for themselves, parents and other adults
  • The ability to deal more effectively with peer pressure
  • The desire to live a healthy and drug free life
  • Increased desire to learn and study at school

 Family Program
Martial Arts Is Great For The Whole Family
Our combined junior and adult TaeKwonDo classes allow parents and their children to train together in classes. You and your children will be able to learn and practice together. The family that kicks together sticks together.

Teen and Adult Program
At Metro TaeKwonDo, we believe that developing and maintaining a sound body and mind are critical to getting the most out of life. In our Teen & Adult program, you will experience a unique approach to self-defense and exercise designed to benefit all areas of your life.

Our goal is to create an environment that gives each individual the opportunity to pursue and achieve a greater level of personal success and freedom. Flexibility will be enhanced through a gradual building process of safe and easy stretching techniques. Most students notice improvements in weight reductions as well as improved toning and strengthening of muscles.

In our Teen and Adult Program Metro TaeKwonDo incorporates a combination of techniques and principles from a variety of Martial Arts styles including Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Philippine Martial Arts and weapons all of which provide our students with a well-balanced, "street smart" self-defense system. Most other styles of martial arts tend to focus on just individual areas of self-defense. Combining the best of many styles into a blended system gives Metro Martial Arts students the advantage they need to protect themselves in virtually any situation.
